Black, white or brown… who cares?

Say No to Racism

These astounding words were spoken by an unlettered man, living in the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula… around 630 AD.

    Jazakallah for this..
    I hope you’re doing well…
Although illiterate may not really have a bad meaning
I’ve heard some people take exception to this term

    I personally feel
    The word unlettered sounds better..

That’s the thing about language though; when we refuse to use a word because it’s acquired other connotations, then the connotation becomes the denotation and the word loses its original meaning.

These are certainly some of the most important words of the Prophet (PBUH) about how people must treat one another.

It’s true, isn’t it? How many times does it happen that we have to really think before using a word because it we know it could be taken in a negative sense? I thought I’d go ahead and use “illiterate” but it made me uneasy anyway, so I’ve made the change now.

These words are indeed priceless gems. InshAllah, I’ll soon be putting together a powerpoint presentation on this theme.
